Ferns close to glory

Wednesday March 10 2010

FERNS HAVE now one hand on the Premier Division title after overcoming Benfica 3-0 at home on Sunday afternoon last.

The home side got the ideal start when Liz Evered scored after just three minutes and then again on 20 minutes to put them 2-0 ahead, and also had the dubious pleasure of missing a penalty in between.

Ferns continued to dominate the second-half and never allowed Benfica into the game, wrapping up the points and moving themselves into red hot favourites for the title when Leona Breen scored with five minutes remaining.

Adamstown still sit in second place after they travelled to Glen Celtic and came away 2-1 winners. Charlene Breen scored for Celtic but two goals from Nikki Burke gave Adamstown the three points that must have them thinking that runners-up spot is now a distinct possibility.

Kilmore's title ambitions have come completely off the rails in the last few weeks and got worse on Sunday when North End did their relegation woes a lot of good when beating them 6-2.

Sadie Murphy and Katrina Parrock scored for Kilmore, but four goals for Rianna Jarrett and one each from Diane Leniston and Audrey Whitty gave North End the points that put them within catching distance of Glen Celtic and Curracloe United.
