Lots at stake in dream derby tie

Tuesday January 31 2012

THE UNDER-17 Leinster champions and All-ireland runners-up of the last two years meet in the penultimate round of the Under-19 Premier league in Tullow on Saturday next at 12 noon, after Gorey's good away win in Naas and Enniscorthy's home win against Navan in the quarter-finals.

Enniscorthy blazed the trail two years ago by winning the Under-17 league and then going all the way to the All-ireland final to lose out to the Munster champions. Gorey matched this feat last year, only to be denied by the Connacht champions in the All-ireland final.

The appearance of these two sides in the Leinster semifinal shows the strength of under-age rugby in Wexford, with both sides having the hunger to finish off what narrowly escaped them at Under-17 level. The winner of this Wexford derby will meet the winner of Roscrea/birr Rebels and Boyne who meet in the other semi-final. High noon in Tullow will no doubt provide a close, tense final between two well-matched teams, both of whom will have their sights set on further glory.
