ENNISCORTHY RUGBY: Enniscorthy 40, Rathdrum 5: Enniscorthy with something of a new-look side easily accounted for home team Rathdrum to win the deferred South East League final of 2010 on Saturday last. This final is normally played in January, but the harsh weather at the start of this year meant that it could not take place.

Enniscorthy welcomed Ross Barbour back to his home club. In fact, he hasn't played for seven years, having played previously with Co. Carlow and last year Old Wesley.

He produced a man of the match performance with his mazy runs from fullback and scored a fine try, but he was also involved in all that was good going forward so he is going to be a massive bonus for the team this year.

Two of last year's Under-19s, scrumhalf Shane Maguire and prop forward Ciarán Murphy, also made their debuts and both acquitted themselves very well. Also returning after being away for a couple of years was lock forward Niall Cummins.

Enniscorthy's enterprising rugby paid dividends and Captain and no. 8 Graham Murphy's ability at the back of the scrum was vital and he was rewarded with three tries. Out-half Ivan Poole and Timmy Morrissey also got in on the tryscoring act.

It was an encouraging performance, which augurs well for the new season. Enniscorthy are aiming for promotion this season and they have brought in a player-coach for the backs, Damien McCabe, who played with D.L.S.P., with coach Declan O'Brien.

In a new role will be former Wexford Senior camogie manager, Stellah Sinnott, who has been appointed team manager - now that's what you call thinking outside the box. Stellah has been on the line for a number of years performing first aid.

Captain Graham Murphy said: 'this is my second stint as Captain and I am really looking forward to the new season. We have lost Seán Wall and Richard Dunne is in Australia, but Ross Barbour has returned as has Niall Cummins, and our new backs coach, Damien McCabe, will improve our back play. He is also a centre which is another addition.

'Stellah knows what it takes to win and she is no fool and will be a very good team manager and won't be afraid to crack the whip. The club is really going forward and from a playing point of view we will also this year have some of the outstanding Under-19 team pushing for places which will certainly keep some of the existing players on their toes.

'We also of course have new state of the art lights, which again will help. Decky O'Brien and Johnny 'Spud' Murphy are with us again this year and Johnny's job will be to really bring through the emerging talent. I am excited about the new season but we have got to hit the ground running as it was our start to last season that caught us at they end,' he concluded.

The firsts and seconds face Kilkenny in Ross Road on Sunday next at 1.30 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the new season's South East League.

Team: Ciarán Murphy (Frank Morris), Luke Goff, Andrew Frazer (Nipper Howe), Johnny Leech, Niall Cummins, John Mackey, Mitchell Dalton (Declan O'Brien), Graham Murphy (three tries), Shane Maguire, Ivan Poole (try), Shane Dalton, Bernie White (Bruce Chapman), Stephen Dalton (Ronnie White), Timmy Morrissey (try), Ross Barbour (try).

D. M. P. A. C.

Club athletes have been very busy over the last few weeks, both at home and abroad.

On the home front, the sucess at the All-Irelands makes D.M.P. the leading club in the county at that level, bagging six golds, three silvers and one bronze.

Marco Pons won gold in the boys' Under-18 discus with a massive throw of 57m, 67cm, setting a new national record in the process, the old record having stood for 27 years, and coincidentally it was held by Frank O'Brien, brother of Mick who is Marco's coach. This was a fantastic achievement and will take a lot of beating.

Oliver Jaeger was in super form, winning gold in the boys' Under-16 shot and also going on to win silver in the discus.

Oliver won the shot putt with a huge throw of 14m 71, while he threw 46m 53 in the discus. This is Oliver's first year competing at this level for the club, and there is huge potential there for the future.

Gold was also the colour of Mary Bohanna's medal after she won the girls' Under-16 hammer, throwing 40m 58cm. Charlotte O'Farrell, another of our fine young throwers, again took gold in her Under-18 hammer.

Charlotte has been very consistant for the club over the last few years and shows no signs of letting up.

Clara McGuinness won silver in the Under-18 shot putt with 10m 05cm. Clara is another moving up through the ranks, and is performing very well. Tomás Furlong did very well to take home the bronze medal, after his throw of 58m 58cm in the Under-19 hammer, while Mary Sutherland took silver in the Junior ladies' hammer with 49m.

Christina Furlong just missed out on a medal when finishing fourth in the Under-18 hammer, as did Christopher Culleton in the Under-16 high jump. Daniel Carroll was another to just miss out on a medal when finishing fourth in the triple jump.

Jennifer Bohanna and Pádraig O Driscoll performed very well. Jennifer was sixth in the Under-15 javelin, while Pádraig made the final of both the triple jump and the 100m.

Both Charlotte O'Farrell and Marco Pons were also in action in Portugal recently, taking part in some tough competitions and indeed holding their own, with Charlotte winning the ladies' hammer with a fine throw of 51m 07cm. Marco won his Junior discus with 52m 33cm, keeping the flag flying for Ireland and D.M.P.

Last weekend at the All-Ireland Masters, Ann Sullivan had a great double, winning both the 1,500m and the 3,000m in Tullamore, proving she is equally successful on track.
