Strong local interest likely for Carrick event
Wednesday February 17 2010
CARRICK-ON-SUIR Triathlon Club has opened registration for its annual event to take place on Saturday, July 17, in and around the town.
This attracts large numbers from Wexford every year, and the New Ross district was well represented in 2009. Indeed, James Benson from Fethard-on-Sea was the winner of the Try-athlon event in an impressive time of one hour, ten minutes and 50 seconds.
The Carrick-on-Suir triathlon is one of the most established in the Irish racing calendar, having first being held in 1994 and subsequently every year since. 'Outsider' magazine recently recommended it as the best triathlon for newcomers to the sport due to the suitability of the course and the welcoming spirit of the locals.
The event consists of a 750m swim in the river Suir, a single circuit 20km bike leg through the South Tipperary countryside, and a 5.8km run along the picturesque river Suir.
The Try-athlon event is designed specifically for those who are new to the sport or are less competent swimmers, and it consists of a shorter 500m swim and the same 20km bike and 5.8km run as the triathlon. Prospective participants can register now online through the club website - www.carricktriathlon.com.
Carrick-On-Suir Triathlon Club is the largest and longest established of its kind in the south-east, providing coaching, training and support for members from Wexford, Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny.
