Club member, John Maguire from Castletown, took an excellent second place in the Cycleways A3 race at Navan on Sunday last from a field of over one hundred riders.

Leinster team member John is renowned for his sprinting prowess and used this ability to win the bunch sprint for second place in impressive style as victory went to a lone breakaway. This was his first race of the season and it augurs well for the rest of the season.

Young Stephen Bracken took the opportunity to jump a category when he competed in the A4 race and acquitted himself with distinction.

Members of the under-age section of the South East Road Club will have very treasured memories from being at the Laurence Dallaglio Cycleslam which had an overnight stop in the Arklow Bay Hotel on Friday night prior to departing to Dublin as part of a fundraising cycle taking in all six stadia used in the Six Nations rugby championship.

The under-age members were also permitted to cycle with the celebrity group which included Laurence Dallaglio himself and English cricket superstar, Andrew Flintoff. The under-age section of the club stood in for photographs with these friendly sporting legends who also willingly signed autograph books and cycling jerseys and were generous with their time.

On Saturday next the club is organising a 100k cycle to raise funds for the Wexford team in this year's Rás. Three club members have been selected for the squad, Cathal Redmond, Anthony Mills and Derrick Evans. There will be a Rás stage end and start in Gorey, thanks to the hard work of Derek Webb.

The route will take in Enniscorthy, Wexford and Gorey. There is also a shorter cycle for under-age members. The cycle will leave the Naomh Éanna grounds, Gorey, at 11 a.m., and 'signing-on' will be from 10 a.m. onwards. For full details contact chief organiser Derek Webb at 087-0617615.

The club welcomed its first female member in quite some time as Dawn Hayden joined the under-age Sunday tour. Dawn proved herself to be more than capable and a very determined cyclist on a tough spin.
