A BITTERLY cold Roundwood Community Centre was the venue for the preliminary rounds of the Leinster Class 2 inter-county championships.

The qualifying group comprised five teams, namely Wexford, Kilkenny, Louth, Wicklow and Meath. Wexford began in impressive fashion with a 6-1 victory over the home side, Wicklow, and followed up with yet another 6-1 success over old rivals Meath.

Wexford were looking good to top the group, but their next game was against Louth who were also progressing nicely after an opening 5-2 victory over Meath. Louth dominated this match as they overwhelmed a disappointing Wexford team to win 5-2.

Wexford's final game was against neighbours Kilkenny and the Slaneysiders got back to winning ways with a 6-1 victory. It was a win that comfortably secured qualification as the group runner-up to Louth, but there is still much to ponder for the management team of Edward Cousins and Colm Byrne ahead of the finals on March 14.

A polished Louth side exposed major frailties in the Wexford team, with the men's doubles pairing of Alan and Vincent Mackay and the mixed doubles pairing of Vincent Mackay and Brideen Lynch the only Wexford succesess.
