Ruthless Hynes secures top spot in Senior group

TOMMY HYNES secured top spot in his group in the Wexford Farmers Co-Op 40 x 20 Senior singles as he was ruthless in a 21-3, 21-8 victory over Cormac Smyth from Castlebridge.

Benny Doyle (Horeswood) almost guaranteed himself another semi-final spot as he came through 21-8, 14-21, 21-15 against Paul Carty of St. Mary's.

The first quarter-final of the Senior doubles also took place last week, and it was good news for Barntown as Mylie Cash and Mikie Berry put in a fine performance to see off Castlebridge duo Jason Murphy and Jim Berry with a 21-5, 21-16 score at the end.

Martin Doran (Horeswood) made sure his name is in the semi-finals in the Intermediate singles as he came through a brilliant game against Mick Armstrong from Davidstown. The opening sets were shared 21-12 and 21-14 but, when it mattered most, Martin Doran squeezed through 21-19 to stay in the race.

Donal Doyle and Frank Maddock combined well to grab a semi-final spot in the Intermediate doubles as the St. Martin's men beat St. Joseph's duo Pat and Eoin Leacy 21-10, 21-11.

Castlebridge was celebrating success in the Junior doubles as Jonny Westlake and Eugene Kelly paired up well to progress to the next round with a 21-10, 21-8 victory over Barntown duo Mick Donovan and Ronan Greene.

The four quarter-finals of the Junior 'C' singles took place, with the following results: Kevin Doyle (Davidstown) beat Stephen Murphy (Castlebridge), 21-11, 21-11; Shane Rossiter (Ballymitty) beat Dan Connors (Barntown), 21-11, 6-21, 21-5; Paddy Cheevers (Horeswood) beat Colin Edwards (St. Joseph's), 21-12, 21-5; Eugene English (Ballyhogue) received a walkover from Paddy Quirke (Ballymitty).

Junior 'D' singles results: Eamonn Murphy (Oulart) beat Willie White (Templeudigan), 217, 21-17; Michael Sinnott (Oulart) beat Fintan Furlong (St. Mary's), 21-2, 21-20; Paul Reddy (Ballymitty) beat P.J. Martin (Bridgetown), 2112, 21-0; Michael Busher (Bridgetown) beat Pat Curran (St. Martin's), 21-11, 21-6; Eamonn Bowe (Davidstown) beat Alan Reid (Barntown), 21-9, 21-15.

The Over-35 singles grade is proving another very close competition and there are many players with title aspirations. Tony Breen secured a spot in the next round, beating Sonny Sheil of Ballyhogue 21-10, 21-13.

Joining him in the next round is Pechelli English as the Davidstown native came through 21-18, 16-21, 21-11 against Ricky Barron in a tremendous battle from both players. Also securing a place in the next round is John Roche (Castlebridge) as he came through another mammoth game, beating Dinny Lyndon from Oulart 5-21, 21-15, 21-20, with the third game on a knife edge.

Declan Hart qualified for the semi-final of the Masters 'B' singles as he defeated Eamonn Bowe (Davidstown), 21-8, 21-7.

In Golden Masters singles, Ger McWilliams did battle with Tommy Rossiter and it was victory for Horeswood, with McWilliams triumphing on a 21-10, 21-12 scoreline. In the Golden Masters doubles, St. Martin's had success as Jim Bergin and Tom Donohoe took victory (21-8, 21-12) over Niall O'Byrne and Billy Heffernan from Oulart.
