Polocrosse action set for Coolgreany

IT'S THAT time of year again when the annual Wicklow Bay polocrosse tournament is almost upon us. The event will take place this August Bank Holiday weekend at: Lookout Stud, Ballykilty Upper, Coolgreany, on Saturday, July 31, and Sunday, August 1. In conjunction with this tournament we are also delighted to be hosting an International C/D drade challenge, The Netherlands v. Ireland.

THE SEMI-FINALS of the Red Mills 600 were the feature on Thursday night's card, races eight and nine, and the first was a cracker as 'Lightning Liam' set the pace. 'Ballina Bob' challenged strongly at the third bend and off the last bend before 'Bullring Bailey' put in his decisive run to the line to score snugly in the end from 'Lightning' in 33.25.

AN UNDER-13 mixed relay competition came into force this year and was not run off at the county finals in Bree on June 13. This event will be held this evening (Wednesday, July 28) at Rosslare track, Rosslare Strand, commencing at 8 p.m. Those who are competing are asked to bring along a birth cert. for those children who are not already registered.

Wexford ladies perform well in National League

ATHLETICS WEXFORD ladies' team had a great day at the National League round two on Sunday last at Morton Stadium in Santry. The team comprising some of Wexford's top female athletes performed very well, with many of them winning their individual events, in the process gaining maximum points for their team.

Wexford teams perform with distinction in Leinster finals

FOLLOWING ON from last week's report on the success of teams from Wexford in the Leinster outdoor team competitions, this week's report centres on soccer, tag rugby, hardcourt tennis, girls' football, pitch and putt and Olympic handball. Again you will see how well Wexford competed in atrocious weather conditions. Perhaps that is a good omen for us. GIRLS' UNDER-15 SOCCER Bree-Davidstown took on Cushinstown of Meath in the first semi-final. After looking like it was going to be a game where Bree-Davidstown had all the possession without the scores, a run along the end line by Shonagh Spratt-Murphy that saw her nearly walk the ball to the net started the scoring for the Wexford girls.

Cooling down at the club

THE MEMBERS of Gorey Tennis Club took time out from a busy week last week to cool down with some ice cream and to help a very good cause. They held a Wimbledown Tournament and an ice cream party for Down Syndrome Ireland, and raised around €200 for the good cause. They also enjoyed strawberries sponsored by Green's Berry Farm, and thanks were sent to all who supported the event.
