'Related Star' runs on well

Wednesday August 18 2010

THURSDAY NIGHT'S card featured the final of the Up The Deise July Unraced Stake, and what an incident-packed race it was.

As traps went up, (6) 'Rockside Jono' and (3) 'Johnnies Buddy' led to the bend, but 'Buddy' went off the bend and there was a pile-up at the second, with 'Buddy' coming off worst. (2) 'Related Star', owned by Charles Kavanagh, sailed through on the inside to go on from favourite 'Big Value' down the back and, with the favourite running wide between the last two bends, 'Related' ran on well to score by a length in 29.72.

The Reggie and Phil Turner Memorial Leger also got under way, with six of the twelve first round heats run, races two to seven. Heat one saw 'Mossblown' lead and was all out to hold 'Compass Hodge' by half a length in 30.30 (550). The winner is trained by Brian McCann.

Heat two went to 'Kavroc Sally' who led 'Ballarue Ben' who challenged her all the way but could not get any closer than a length in 30.47. 'Kavroc' is owned by Myles Roban and Brian Plummer (Enniscorthy).

Heat three went to ' Compass Molly' who led and ran out two and a half lengths too good for 'Uptown Billy' for owner Helen Wadsworth in 30.52. Heat four was a close-run thing as ' Lightning Liam' led but was all out to hold 'Assain Blue' who finished well to get to a head of 'Lightning' in 30.38. John Flanagan is the winning owner.

Heat five saw the completion of a nice double for the Wadsworths as 'Compass Cowbow' proved three and a half lengths too good for 'Dysert Saidhbh' in 30.72. Heat six saw the Harry Seery-trained ' Ballyverry Lee' lead and run out a good winner by two and a half lengths from 'Bing Trader' in 30.45.

The ninth race, an A1, saw 'Ah Boolavogue', owned by James Dempsey, lead and hold ' Lemon Ashton' comfortably in 29.29. The tenth race went to the Nick Turnertrained 'Lifes Funny' who led and ran on strongly to hold the finishing 'Kiltrea Kiera' in 32.84 (600 yards). Laurence Byrne (Gorey is the owner.

Monday of last week was a benefit night meeting for the Oulart-The Ballagh camogie club, and there was a big turn-out and a pleasant evening was had by all. On the track the second round of the Nobooth for Gary Unraced Bitch Stake was featured.

Heat one went to the Aidan Roche (Barntown)-owned 'Kingsmill Athena' who led all the way to score by two and a half lengths from 'Tintern Lass' in a fast 29.08. Heat two saw the Seán Dunphy-owned 'Bar The One' take a few knocks at traps before setting about catching leader 'Kaval', and she did it in style, scoring by three lengths in a fine 29.02.

Heat three was the fastest of the night as hot favourite 'Cool It Baby' led but had to be sharp to hold 'Archaton Linda' who pushed her hard to the third bend before 'Baby' stayed on strongly to score by four lengths in a superb 28.85 for owner Trevor Cummins (Navan).

'Piercestown Bag' was hot favourite for the fourth heat but she didn't come away from trap one. 'She Likes Life' led but was unable to hold the faviourite who got up to score by three-quarters of a length in 29.49 for owner Seamus Whelan (Piercestown).

The fifth race, an A6, had several leaders, but the one who led at the line was 'Chas Blue Bard' owned by Tommy Mahoney in a time of 29.71. The Donegan Print/Track Supporters A5 Stake first round was run, races six to nine. Heat one was a close one with the Nick Turnertrained 'Crokers Boy' getting up to beat leader res. K 'Down Town' by a head in 29.39 for owner Jim Tracey. 'Kingsmill Peach' was completing a nice double for owner Aidan Roche when scoring by four lengths from 'Metric Eve' in 29.40.

Heat three saw another clear winner as 'Doodles Rocket' led and ran out an easy five lengths ahead of his nearest rival, 'Cavies Biffo', in 29.33 for owners Rita and Edel Harrington.

Heat four was the quickest, with a fine effort from 'Tyford Jet', owned by Noel O'Gorman (Taghmon) as he raced to a five and a half length success in 29 seconds. The last race saw 'Tyford' to the fore again as 'Tyford Lily', owned by Mairéad and Olivia O'Gorman, scored by two lengths in 29.40 to complete a nice double.
