Gorey Rangers Under-12s made their exit from the S.F.A.I. Cup on Saturday last when they lost 4-1 to Villa from Waterford. Villa, who had won the Under-11 All-Ireland Danone Cup last year and had defeated League of Ireland club Mervue United 5-1 in the last round, certainly lived up to their reputation as one of the favourites to land the silverware. Although the Gorey lads did not perform to their usual level, credit must go to a very accomplished Waterford side.

Play was keenly contested in the early stages, and the home side were holding out for a scoreless first-half when disaster struck two minutes before the break. Gorey failed to clear a long hopeful ball just outside the box and allowed Villa's right winger to nip in to score past Adam Dunbar.

Ten minutes into the second-half Villa doubled their lead when the home defence gifted them their second. Gorey hit back almost immediately when Eoin McGuckin beat the 'keeper from 25 yards out with a wonderful strike.

Just as Rangers gained inspiration from their goal, they were knocked back on their heels when Villa exploited poor defending to make it 3-1. They added a fourth in stoppage time when a pass from defence was intercepted and Villa's forward finished superbly from just outside the box.

Gorey have had an excellent run in the competition and will be disappointed not to have matched last season's feat of reaching the quarter-final. They can have no complaints as they were outshone by a side that will now have aspirations of winning the competition. Best for Rangers were Ryan Cullen and James Lynch in defence, and Conor Levingstone and Eoin McGuckin up front.

Gorey Rangers' Under-12 second team, under manager Ciarán Kavanagh, are having a great season with seven consective wins. Well done to all the lads who played extremly well.

Saturday's match against nearest rivals Taghmon was hard-fought, with Gorey triumphant 2-1 thanks to goals from Dillon Kenny and Oisín Hobbs.
