Co. P.R.O. wins award
Wednesday March 10 2010
THE 39th annual general meeting of the Community Games movement was held in the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone, recently.
Delegates from 30 counties were in attendance to witness the election of the new Board of Directors and to air their views on the various motions and recommendations put before them. President, Michael Curley, said that we continue to plan for the future with our key partners, the Irish Sports Council and the Health Service Executive (HSE), and he paid tribute to both sponsors for their continued financial support.
Maria Lordan-Dunphy on behalf of the HSE said that she was delighted to have been associated with Community Games for the past number of years and, even though she was moving on, she said that she intended to stay involved through her own children and area.
Fiachra Ó Mathúna, C.E.O. of Community Games, gave a comprehensive presentation at the A.G.M. on the new Games website, and he outlined the many striking features on the site and said he hoped that the members would find it informative.
The national and regional press were in attendance to receive their awards for the excellent coverage afforded to the Games movement over the past year, and the county P.R.O's were praised for their excellent coverage in keeping the organisation in the news and ensuring that the children get the recognitition they deserve.
P.R.O. Anne Cowman was the recipient of an award. Congratulations all round to all who help with the reports during the year and to the papers for publishing them. It is much appreciated.
At the A.G.M. a small few motions managed to get passed, but take note that these new activities will not come into force for two years. There will be a boys' Under-16 javelin competition, a girls' Under16 discus event, and a handwriting competition for boys and girls Under-10.
The Under-12 skittles competition will be mixed (not girls as it is now), and there will also be an Under-16 mixed skittles event. An Under-14 butterfly event for boys and girls is to be introduced into swimming as well as an Under-16 squad for boys and girls.
In the tag rugby competitions, the Under-10 will be ten minutes per half and the Under-16 will be 15 minutes per half. The recommendations received from counties will be passed to the relevant committees and hopefully put in place for the coming season.
