Bad start ruined Wexford's hopes

Wednesday March 03 2010

A BAD start in their opening game against Laois was the downfall of the Wexford 'B' side in their qualifying group in Vicarstown.

A 6-1 defeat to the O'Moore side meant it was going to be an uphill battle for the second qualifying spot in the group. Wexford's only success came in the men's doubles where Lee Healy and William Gilliard won 2117, 21-14 against Edward Sharkey and Niall Davis.

It didn't help when Kilkenny defeated Laois 52 to leave Wexford needing six points in their game against the Cats to qualify.

Despite a muchimproved performance with Wexford turning the form book upside down and winning 5-2, it was too little, too late as it still left the Model county one point adrift of Kilkenny and out of the final placing.

Bitter disappointment then for the squad of Helen Shalloe, Denise O'Leary, Jenny Winter, Orla Scallan, William Gilliard, Lee Healy, Seamus Redmond, Ger Molloy and Nicky Sinnott.
