JOHN Langan-Murphy proved to be a winner with his accuracy from placed balls in the Gorey District Junior 'D' hurling championship final played on Saturday last in Páirc Uí Síocháin.

The Alley got off to a good with Kevin Hall scoring within the first minute and Barry Whelan adding another from a free shortly afterwards. The Gorey side registered their first score on the tenth minute, and the Alley replied with a placed ball from free-taker Whelan.

However, the crucial score came in the 20th minute when the Offaly native, Shane McGuckin, blasted home a goal to give them the lead for the first time, and one they held on to for the remainder of the final.

John Langan-Murphy hit the target again, with Pat Laffan getting his name on the scoresheet for the Alley on the stroke of half-time to leave the score at 1-3 to 0-4 in favour of the town team at the interval.

Naomh Éanna's Langan-Murphy once again, from placed balls, got off to a bright start in the second-half. Indeed, he was on song throughout the half, registering a personal tally of four points.

The only scores the Alley could muster in the second period were two points from placed balls and a consolation point from Paul Gahan in the dying seconds, but it was too late as a goal was needed at this stage for the Monamolin and Kilmuckridge men who have lost the final two years in a row.

Michael O'Neill, Chairman of the Gorey District committee, presented the cup to a jubilant captain of Naomh Éanna, Ronan McKenna.

The remaining District finals are down for decision over the coming days.
