The course at the moment is looking splendid and at its best, thanks to head greenkeeper Kevin Carroll. Open week is from Tuesday, August 3, to Saturday, August 7. It's looking very good with full timesheets, splendid prizes, and hopefully nice weather to look forward to.

COURTOWN

Let us begin this week by mentioning some competitions regarding our Juniors. On Wednesday last we hosted the Popplewell Trophy, which is a competition held each year between Courtown, Tara Glen and Seafield. Unfortunately, Seafield were unable to field a team but Junior Chairman Paddy Dore was able to put out a second Courtown team which played great golf to take the spoils.

The winning team was Jack McEvoy (capt.), Seán O'Connor, Luke Gaffney, Seán Caffrey, Cian Fahy and Ryan Coates-Nolan.

The Tom Funge Memorial Cup for Under-18 boys and girls open day takes place on Thursday, August 18. Congratulations to Ross Steedman who, along with his father Neville, reached the semi-final of the All-Ireland father and son competition recently. Two hundred and fifty teams set out in this competition and Ross and Neville were eventually beaten by the outright winners, the Gleesons from Dublin.

Otherwise it was an extremely busy weekend at the club with competitions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and, with the weather staying favourable for the most part and the course being in fantastic condition, some great scores were returned. The teams classic on Friday proved to be a great success, and on Friday night the clubhouse was all shook up with Cathal Byrne performing as Elvis.

The President's prize (Malachy Travers) will be played this weekend with qualifiers on Friday and Saturday morning, and then the top 24 and top three gross will play a further nine holes in the afternoon. Good luck to the President and all who are taking part in his competition.

BALLYMONEY

A well-attended nine-hole competition was won by Wally O'Brien (16) with an excellent 23 points which included the only two of the evening, and thus Wally took home a healthy rollover pot. Noel McDonald (16) held off Paul O'Brien (22) for second place with 20 points on countback. Sammy Walker (10) was unlucky to be out of the prizes, also with 20 points.

Saturday's stableford was played in very good conditions and even with so many televised sporting attractions available, a good turn-out saw some fine scoring. Once again the ever-improving Gavin Doyle (10) racked up an outstanding score. His 43 points was just good enough to beat the mercurial Joe Lee (10) who finished with 42 points.

Sammy Walker (10) made up for Wednesday's near miss with a welcome return to the prizes with thid pace on 41 points. All three players are down to nine handicaps now.

Tara Meadows-sponsored matchplay second round: Kevin Furlong beat Declan Hayden.

This Wednesday sees another nine-hole competition, and on Sunday next it will be a strokeplay from the green tees for a change.
