Following our delayed Christmas dinner, the Captain of the society thanked all those who played. He congratulated all the winners and thanked Courtown Golf Club for the use of the facilities.

Our next outing will be on January 21 at the European Golf Club. All members will be informed in the usual manner.

NEW ROSS

The Christmas hamper competition at New Ross attracted an entry of 132 teams of four. The competition ran from December 18 up to and including January 7.

The shot of the competition must have been the hole-in-one on the par three ninth hole by club Competition Secretary Andrew Ryan - well done Andrew.

More pleasing to the organisers was the fact that all competitors seemed to have played without undue delay. At the club we feel that when playing in any competition your place on the course is 'immediately behind the group in front and not in front of the group behind'.

Results: 1, T. Morrissey (7), N. Morrissey (14), J. Morrissey (4, St. Helen' s], E. Doyle (13, St. Helen's); 2, S. Aldridge (12), A. Ryan (6), D. Hosey (5), D. O'callaghan; 3, P. Whelan (18), S. Murphy (15), R. O'dwyer (19), T. Whelan (13); 4, J. Byrne (10), D. Redmond (10), P. Merrigan (14), A. Ryan (6).

We would like to wish all our members and all of you who play in New Ross on a regular basis a very happy new year.

TEMPLARS SOCIETY

The Templars Golf Society had their Christmas outing on Wednesday, December 28, in New Ross Golf Club. With an odd shower of rain, weather conditions were generally good.

Over 40 members took to the fairways in the fourball better ball competition. Some good scores were recorded.

Winners on 46 points were brothers Paul and Lorcan Barden. Second place went to Val Molloy and Cyril O'grady and third went to brothers Michael and Markie Murphy. The nearest to the pin was won by Peter Bolger and the longest drive was won by Cyril O'grady. The twos clubs were won by Bob Doyle and Peter Bolger.

Our next outing will take place on February 25 in New Ross Golf Club. Full details to follow at a later date.

The society now have available caps, jumpers, polo shirts and wind-breakers. Anyone wishing to order any of the above, please contact Michael Ryan at 087-2725264.

BALLYMONEY

The singles stableford played over the weekend saw a good turn-out and thankfully very good weather. Sunday saw perfect conditions and scoring of the highest order, however the winning score of 43 points was posted by Eoin Devlin (7) on Saturday morning.

Seán Furlong (13) took second prize with 42 points, and commitee member Anthony Fortune (16) was third with 41 points, holding off Richard Temple on countback. New Captain Sammy Walker (8) racked up 40 points and got nothing!

The A.G.M. on Saturday was well-attended and was chaired by outgoing Captain, Andrew Byrne. Andrew thanked the commitee and members for their support and help during the year and welcomed new Captain, Sammy Walker.

Gorey native Sammy is a very popular choice as Captain and restores a link with the purple and gold-wearing hurlers. Sammy hurled with pride and distinction in the Senior championship for the county back in the day. Sammy thanked Andrew and the commitee for the honour and everyone wished him well.

Club President Ron Breen made his address and was pleased to announce that, despite the current climate (nothing to do with the weather, mind), membership had stayed at the same level and competition participation was indeed healthy. Secretary Charlie Logan made his report followed by Leo Gleeson's Treasurer's report. Next weekend sees a threeball scramble team

event (teams allowed two G.U.I. guests).

ROSSLARE

On Sunday, January 1, Rosslare Golf Club welcomed its new Captains for 2012. Willie Ennis, Maura Foran and our Junior Captains, Eoin Roche and Emma Murphy, all got the year off to a good start with four tremendous drives down the middle of the first fairway.

There was a very big crowd and afterwards all four and the incoming Presidents, Tommy A. Byrne and Irene Walker, all contributed to a very enjoyable evening. ViceCaptain, Len Fowler, was M.C. Best wishes to all for 2012.

The A.G.M. was held on December 13 and the following are the officers and committee elected: Captain, Willie Ennis; ViceCaptain, Len Fowler; lady Captain, Maura Foran; lady Vice-captain, Moira Fortune; President, Tommy A. Byrne; Hon. Secretary, Frank Codd; Hon. Treasurer, Stan Jackson; Committee: Martin Flynn, Michael Cowman, Denis Noonan, Dermot Hall, Tim Quinlivan, John Kelleher, Tommy Tierney, Bill Underwood, John Mcdonald (ex-officio).

A major decision made at the A.G.M. was to now make the Burrow five-day membership into a seven-day membership. The annual sub is €515 (including all levies) with an entrance fee of €500 which is payable over two years. There are also vacancies for membership on the 18-hole course. Ring 05391-32203 for information on both courses.

On Saturday week last, one of our longest-serving members, Walter Rahilly, was laid to rest. Walter was a member for 59 years and served as Captain in 1962. As well as serving the club in the committee room, he was also an active player on teams and was a member of the Provincial Towns Cup team that won the Leinster title in 1965. To his wife and family, sincere sympathy is extended. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

ST. HELEN'S

What a difference a year makes! Last Christmas and new year, we were frozen out most days. This year, the temperatures were so mild, and rain-free days made good turn-outs every day over the festive period.

Membership renewals were brisk, with people availing of the 10% discount on offer for early payment, while several new members are taking advantage of the first time member's offer.

Tuskar Rock members took advantage of the Christmas offer of playing in St. Helen's Bay while greens staff carried out work on their course.

December 26: 1, Liam Bennett, 24 points; 2, E. Masterson, 24 points.

December 27: 1, J. Butler, J. Delaney, P. Conlon, 52 points; 2, J. Holt, M. Everey, D. Evans, 51 points.

Once again Marie Byrne organised lunch on January 6 to celebrate Nollaig na mban. The ladies had a lovely lunch and a most enjoyable afternoon.

Please remember that the new indices have come into play since January 5 on a trial basis. The new indices are indicated on the ladies' golf score cards.

If anyone is still interested in playing on teams this year and have not put forward their names at the A.G.M., there is still time to do so. Please see the notice in the ladies' locker room.

The second round of the winter league competition must be completed by January 15.

WEXFORD

Friday, January 6, three-person team event, 14 holes stableford: 1, Ollie Dempsey Snr. (20), Ollie Dempsey Jnr. (15), Jimmy O'grady (24), 74 points.

Saturday, January 7, fourball (lambs), 14 holes stableford: 1, Shane Lucey (18), Paddy Casey (17), 38 points; 2, Christy O'gorman (19), Brendan Mulligan (20), 37 point; 3, Ray Murphy (20), Ollie Dempsey Jnr. Sunday, January 8, fourball (lambs) stableford, 14 holes: 1, Nicky Murphy (12), Fintan Mccleane (18), 37 points; 2, Conor Morris (7), Bob Byrne (16), 35 points (back five); 3, Pat Murphy (10), Leo Murphy (19), 35 points.

There was a lot of amazement in the golf club Sunday night when the results came out. Conor Morris got his first prize in nearly four years, but there is no doubt that Bob Byrne did all the scoring! The lamb will taste like steak to Conor - well done Bob.
