Wednesday February 10 2010
THREE inter-county players from Wexford played prominent roles as W.I.T. began their defence of the Ashbourne Cup third level camogie title with a clearcut 4-19 to 0-7 quarter-final victory away to this year's hosts, C.I.T., last week.
Team captain Ursula Jacob lined out at full-forward and finished with 28 to her credit while Katrina Parrock, a first year student, scored a goal from midfield. In addition, the 2009 player of the tournament, Stacey Redmond, lined out in the left halfback position.
W.I.T. now progress to the semi-final on Saturday, February 20, in Cork against University of Ulster (Jordanstown).
In other college news, midfielder Mark Molloy (St. James') and substitute James Gahan (Ballygarrett) assisted W.I.T. to a 2-16 to 1-5 win over G.M.I.T. in the first round of the Fitzgibbon Cup in Ballygunner on Thursday last.
Molloy was the sole Wexford representative on the W.I.T. Senior football team for their 1-13 to 1-10 win over Belfast Metropolitan College in the first round of the Trench Cup in Maynooth on Thursday last, contributing a point from right halfback.
They will face another northern team in the shape of University of Ulster (Coleraine) in the quarter-final on February 17. The panel also includes David Doyle-Murphy of Cloughbawn.
The W.I.T. sports scholarship awards ceremony for 2009-2010 took place in the Gallery Restaurant on Monday of last week. Among the 46 students presented with their scholarships were Wexford's Francesca Reville (Menapians, athletics) and Mark Molloy (hurling) who were silver level winners, as well as bronze level victors Seán Gaul (St. Anne's, Gaelic football), Eoin Moore (OulartThe Ballagh, hurling), Fionn McSwiney (Enniscorthy, rugby) and Katrina Parrock (St. Ibar's-Shelmalier, camogie).
