Wexford get off to promising start

Wednesday March 03 2010

THE WEXFORD Minor footballers started preparations with a positive win in a challenge game against Waterford in Good Counsel's grounds which was played over three half-hour periods.

Showing a fantastic work ethic, the Wexford lads gelled extremely well on their first outing and played an attacking brand of football while defending with ferocious enthusiasm.

The opening exchanges were played at a fast pace, with Dean Wright (Blackwater) and Colm Kehoe (Cloughbawn) dominating midfield, leading to plenty of scoring opportunities for an exciting full-forward line of Seán Ring (Ballyhogue), Niall Moore (St. Fintan's) and Graham Cullen (Gusserane).

Ring opened the scoring with a long-range point from the left wing before Cullen got in on the scoring with a typically stylish point.

Kieran Butler (Geraldine O'Hanrahans) then burst into the game with a spectacular goal after cutting in from right half-forward.

Jonathan Bealin (Castletown) and Alan Tobin (Starlights) added points for Wexford who were now completely on top with all six backs dominating their men.

Waterford hit a purple patch, notching up three points before the end of the first period.

Seán Ring again opened the scoring in the second-half with a great point before adding a goal from a penalty and two points from frees. Niall Moore struck a great goal after great team play which ensured all starting forwards got their names on the scoresheet.

Wexford ensured that all players received playing times but the changes didn't affect their dominance, with all keen to make an impression.

Half-backs Matthew Cody (Rathgarogue-Cushinstown) and Graham Carty (St. Mary's, Maudlintown) moved forward impressively, with Cody finishing the scoring after Alan Tobin had scored a fourth goal to leave the final score 4-12 to 1-4.
