Taghmon through by the skin of their teeth

Wednesday August 25 2010

LAST YEAR'S beaten finalists, Taghmon-Camross, barely scraped through from Group A to the quarter-finals of the Junior hurling championship after a sensational ending to their match against Geraldine O'Hanrahans at sun-drenched Cushinstown.

Two goals which were both scored in added time gave them the draw with Geraldine O'Hanrahans that was just enough to put them through.

The New Ross town side, due mainly to the deadly accuracy of free-taker Jimmy Smith, were 0-6 to 0-2 ahead at the end of a scrappy first-half, and they appeared to have the game won when leading by 0-14 to 0-8 at the end of 60 minutes.

Then Barry O'Gorman scored a fine goal for Taghmon-Camross in the first minute of added time, and a minute later the ball was back over the Geraldines goal-line again when their netminder, Niall Carroll, fumbled when he was tackled by the inrushing Richard Comerford.

This was an incredibly close call for the team which succumbed to Craanford in last year's decider, and it would appear that they will have it all to do when they take on next door neighbours Adamstown in the quarter-final in O'Kennedy Park, New Ross, on Sunday next.

No doubt some of the local Geraldine O'Hanrahans contingent will be looking on ruefully, as they should have had this one wrapped up.
