SHAMROCKS HAD a well-deserved victory over a disappointing Our Lady's Island team in Group A of the Junior football championship at Hollymount on Saturday last. With both sides having lost their opening game, a victory was a must for either to give them a chance of progression to the knockout stages.

With the aid of the breeze, the Enniscorthy men started well and surged into a 0-5 to nil lead after 15 minutes. Paddy Connors showed good accuracy, accounting for three of these points.

Rory Reville opened the scoring for Our Lady's Island after 25 minutes and this was the best it got for them in the first-half as they got little chance from the Shamrocks backs. Points from Maurice Casey and John Dobbs rounded off the first-half scoring to leave the Rocks leading by 0-7 to 0-1 at the break.

The leaders might have thought that they hadn't put enough scores up with the help of the wind, when in the opening minute of the second-half substitute Kieran Parrock found the net for Our Lady's Island to reduce the score (0-7 to 1-1).

However, the Shamrocks responded well and by the 45th minute had the game won. Goals by Eamon O'Brien and Paul Giltrap coupled with points by Colin Sheehan and Mikey Dempsey had the Rocks leading by 29 to 1-1. From here the game petered out as a contest, with points from Eamon O'Brien and John Kavanagh only met with a pointed '45 by Adrian Meyler for Our Lady's Island.
