League starts Friday night in Waterford

Wednesday March 03 2010

WEXFORD YOUTHS will be hoping to reach new heights when they open their Airtricity Division 1 league campaign away to local rivals Waterford United at the R.S.C. this Friday night.

Having finished mid-table last term with a sixth placing, manager Noel O'Connor, along with club supremo Michael Wallace, know it will be more difficult to reach a top four placing this season, but that's what they are aiming for.

Division 1 has taken on a whole new look with the likes of Derry City and Cork City Foras joining the lower flight, having been banished from the Premier Division. The Division also includes Shelbourne along with Waterford, which is an indication of the increased standard that Wexford Youths face this season.

They had an impressive first competitive game on Saturday night last in the Tallaght Stadium when going down by just 2-1 to Shamrock Rovers in the Leinster Senior Cup.

While Waterford will be boosted by the signing of former Cork player, Liam Kearney, Wexford Youths have not been idle, bringing in Anthony Wolfe, a former Cobh Ramblers player, and Graiguenamanagh's Dean Broaders to replace the departed Peter White and Conor Sinnott.

Gary Sheahan and Danny Furlong struck up a promising attacking formation, while players like Shane Dempsey and Jimmy Keohane will have benefited from last season's experience.

Anto Russell and David Breen will provide the experience at the back, with Packie Holden setting out on his second season as the Youths netminder.

Wexford Youths now feel they are more ready than ever to provide a more consistent approach to each game and push their way towards challenging for a top four placing.
