Counsel come from behind

GOOD COUNSEL College (New Ross) came from eight points behind at one stage to defeat Wexford C.B.S. by a point in Páirc Charman on Tuesday of last week in the Keevans Cup 'B' football schools final.
The Wexford team got the ideal start with two goals inside the opening five minutes, and they led by 3-1 to 0-2 at the end of the opening quarter.
C.B.S. attacked from the throwin and their big full-forward, Dermot Flood, had the ball in the Good Counsel net from close range inside the first minute. Midfielder Colm Browne accounted for their second goal three minutes later.
Darren Foley and Noel Colfer then opened the Good Counsel account with a point apiece, with Colfer electing to tap the ball over the bar when a goal opportunity seemed on.
The ball was very soon back in the net again at the other end when a long kick in by Barry Harpur appeared to be going wide, but Dermot Flood followed up and somehow succeeded in making a connection with his boot right on the endline.
To the surprise of all and not least the advancing New Ross 'keeper, Kevin Burke, it curled inside the post, and that third goal left the Wexford town school 3-1 to 0-2 ahead at the midway stage of the first-half.
With the aid of a well-taken goal in the 16th minute by Shane O'Gorman following a fine passing move which extended the length of the pitch, Good Counsel came much more into the game. By half-time they had cut the deficit to a point (3-1 to 1-6) as Darren Foley, Ciaran Butler and Darragh Doyle followed up with some delightful points.
C.B.S. pulled away again early in the second-half when Barry Walsh and Colm Browne pointed, but they suffered a severe blow near the end of the third quarter when Darren Foley goaled from a penalty for Good Counsel after Larry Martin was fouled.
Minutes later the ball was back in the C.B.S. net again when Shane O'Gorman scored his second goal following another fine movement in which Jack Guiney played a big part.
A Darragh Doyle point put the New Ross side four points clear five minutes from the end, but C.B.S. didn't give in without a fightback and they finished just one point adrift after substitute Marco Pons accounted for their fourth goal with time almost up.
