Wexford in the rare auld times proves a winner

Wednesday August 25 2010

WADING through the Wexican influence on Facebook it's not surprising to find lots of ex-pats hankering after the olden days.

In fact one highly popular Wexford based Facebook page is entitled 'The Good Old Days In Wexford' and is a daily draw for people who not only live in Wexford town, but those who emigrated many moons ago.

The wall of this facebook page is full of nostalgia – and it's been a place where many Wexfordians spend a leisurely hour swapping funny stories about growing up.

Among the memories posted in recent weeks were tales of the old regatta that was once held on the Quays, and the challenge of taking on the 'slippery' or 'greasy' pole.

Another contributor remembers long hours sitting on the beach at Kaat Strand looking towards the town, while another lamented the loss of the Guillemot from the woodenworks.

One ex-pat has a very vivid childhood memory that he believes happened circa 1985. 'Does anyone remember when the Lion's escaped from the circus? I don't know if that was real or a rumour but there was some excitement.'

Wexford townies recall misspent youths in the Forrester's Hall where gentlemen only lounged around the green baize of the snooker hall. Meanwhile the benefits of Woolheads over Woolworths are also discussed on another thread.

For children of the 70s and 80s a music post on the wall conjures up huge memories though. The poster asks what do the songs 'Happiness', 'La Paloma', 'Don't Let the Stars Get In Your Eyes' and Mouldy Old Dough' have in common.

They were, of course, the theme tunes to the old pirate radio stars of Community Radio Wexford (CRW) - sadly all now deceased, namely Breda Broaders, Des 'Doc' Moran, 'Danno' Murphy and Joe 'Faldo' Fallon.

For people seeking a trip down memory lane, where they can swap some of their own stories this is a Facebook page that will easily pass some pleasurable hours.
