Tidy Towns awards presented

TWO North Wexford Community Groups picked up awards at the ceremony for winners in the South East region of the annual Tidy Towns Competition in Tipperary recently.

Aine Brady TD, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, presented the awards to winners of various categories, including the county winner, Craanford, and the highly commended village Ballycanew.

Craanford got the highest marks in the county with 280 points topping the table in the county for the fifth year in a row, while Ballycanew came second 274 points.

Also present on stage were Gary Breen, General Manager, Fáilte Ireland South East and Ray Kelly, Marketing Director, SuperValu which sponsors the competition.

In congratulating everyone involved, the Minister pointed out that 2009 again proved to be a successful year for Tidy Towns with a record entry of 720 towns and villages. 'I believe that in a time when we are faced with such a challenging economic situation, this sense of community spirit and pride in your village or town is vital,' said the Minister.
