Threat to Tesco project
BUT SUPERMARKET WILL GO AHEAD, SAY SOURCES
TESCO has declined to comment on speculation that its planned hypermarket on the outskirts of Gorey has been shelved. However, local sources say the project is still likely to go ahead, but later in the year.
At the beginning of the year, Tesco announced there would be reduced levels of capital expenditure in the UK, as it modified its approach to expansion in the coming year. This led to speculation locally that the Gorey project was one of several planned hypermarkets which were now under threat.
A spokesman for Tesco said the company never comments on speculation one way or the other, but pointed out that the planned project is developer-led.
Senator Michael D'arcy, who last year welcomed the jobs that would be brought to Gorey with the project, said that his local sources say that Tesco is still committed to the project.
