Sewing group put skills to good use

A UNIQUE work of art is up for grabs as the Bree community centre refurbishment committee embarks on an unusual fundraiser. Committee chairman David Minogue received a magnificent piece of locally made handiwork last week from the Bree sewing group, which will be put up as the main prize in a raffle.
The 16 strong group, chaired by Margaret O'Neill, has been a regular user of the centre since it first came together about ten years ago.
So they thought it was only right that they should lend a skilful hand with the refurbishment by supplying a double bed size patchwork quilt called 'Friendship Star'.
'A good number of hours have gone into the quilt,' said sewing group teacher Mary Curtis. The group, who meet once a week throughout the winter months to swap ideas and encourage each other in their work, specialise in patchwork, using sewing machines, and Mary reckons that interest is growing, if only because the recession has left people with more time for craft hobbies.
The group started as an offshoot of the I.C.A. but has taken on a life of its own over the past decade.
