HOST Jimmy Fleming breathed a sigh of relief as Liverpool F.C. began to tuck away the goals late in their European League game against Turkish side Trabzonspor. With a quarter hour left to play in Turkey the game was deadlocked and the prospect of extra time loomed. A large contingent of his customers were glued to the screen and in no mood for a public meeting.

However, a second – mainly female – section of the crowd in Jimmyz Bar clearly had no interest in the soccer. They chatted their way through the sports coverage, many of them happily sitting at tables where their view of the television was obscured by pillars as the time ticked past the eight o'clock mark.

While the aggregate score remained 11, Cllr. Malcolm Byrne joked with reporters that they would have a great story line if violence broke out between the footie fans and the Larry Murphy faction. There were certainly no Gardaí around to keep order if things turned nasty as Superintendant Catherine Kehoe had decided that it would not be appropriate for her to attend a public meeting staged in a public house.

Councillor Fleming did not rise to Councillor Byrne's ball hoping but he looked worried nonetheless. His concerns were banished as a luckless Trabzonspor defender turned the ball into his own net and then Dirk Kuyt tapped in a simple goal to applause from the soccer fans. Then there was no unrest as the barman hit the mute button after the full time whistle blew.
