Rare sheep rescued from locked container

Wednesday July 28 2010

TWO RARE BREED sheep were rescued from a locked container in Bunclody last week, after they were found in a poor state. The Soay sheep were found in a container on an unfinished building site last Wednesday. A young boy playing in the area heard the pitiful bleats of the sheep and told his father who contacted Bunclody Gardai, who in turn contacted the NWSPCA.

The animal welfare inspectors went to the scene and found the ewe and lamb, locked in the container, without food, water or bedding. As well as being left in poor conditions, the ewe was also lame.

They were brought by the SPCA to a foster home, and were given veterinary treatment. 'Without the help of foster homes like this we'd be in serious difficulty,' said a spokesperson for the NWSPCA, thanking the family that had volunteered to take the sheep in.

Gardai in Bunclody are investigating how the sheep came to be left in the container.
