A public meeting in the Esmonde Street scout hall last week, aimedat injecting new blood into the defunct scouting operation, attracted onlya handful of people, much to the disappointment of former leaders EddieRedmond and John Carroll.
Young children in Gorey were left without a scouting organisation twoyears ago with the existing SAI affiliated body folded through lack ofinterest by the adult volunteers.
`It disbanded two years ago because the leaders had other commitmentsand there was no new blood to carry on,' said Eddie Redmond, who addedthat it is only through cajoling by other members of the public that theyhave decided to give it another go.
In September they hope to set up a new movement aimed at all ages, from junior beavers up to the 17-year-old fully fledged scouts.
`The turn out at the meeting wasn't great, there were only a few peoplethere. A couple of parents attended and some people from other voluntaryorganisations,' he said, adding that more voluntary help would be requiredto get the unit off the ground properly.
Despite the small attendance, the meeting decided to circulate theschools with literature in early September, with a view to recruiting youngmembers into the organisation.
Eddie and John also intend knocking on doors over the summer monthsin the hope of recruiting new leaders.
`The kids are out there, but we just don't have the leaders,' he saidadding that the scouting unit will be open to both boys and girls.
