Elizabeth was a talented knitter of Aran sweaters
SHE was a familiar face to many in Gorey town, as she regularly sat in her front porch at Convent Close, watching the world go by.
Elizabeth Travers, nee Mcdonald, passed away peacefully on January 10 last at her home following an illness. She was 89, and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Born in Monaseed in 1922, Elizabeth later moved to Tara Hill. During the war years, she worked in the UK, and often talked about the Blitz. She worked in a factory which made the wings for Spitfires, and she often had to go underground during the bombings.
While still in her early twenties, she returned home to Gorey and she and Tom Travers married, and they made their home at Mcdermott Street, and then Wexford Street. In later years she moved to Convent Close.
Tom sadly passed away in 1965, and she was left to rear a young family. They had six children, Margaret, Frances, Andrew, Alfie, Peter (now deceased), and Kevin.
Elizabeth worked hard all her life, and was known as a talented knitter of Aran sweaters, and many of her creations were sent to the UK and the USA, as they were much sought after.
She loved nature, and especially loved nature programmes on television. She was also fond of gardening. She also enjoyed socialising with her friends, and was a member of the Gorey Guild of the ICA, and also in later years, of Gorey Old Folks Club. She loved to go on the various outings with the ICA. She also loved books, newspapers, and Ireland's Own, especially its short stories, and also loved crosswords.
Elizabeth loved Gorey and its events such as the St. Patrick's Day Parade and various shows and concerts.
She is survived by her loving family, Margaret, Frances, Andrew, Alfie and Kevin, and was pre-deceased by Peter. She is also deeply regretted by her sisters Sally and Kitty, brother Ger, sonsin-law, daughters-in-law, sister-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a wide circle of family, friends, and neighbours. Her Funeral Mass was held at St. Michael's Church, Gorey, on January 12 last, and she was laid to rest afterwards in St. Michael's Cemetery. May she Rest in Peace.
