NEW ROSS Town Council were honoured to have met with the late Senator Ted Kennedy just over a year ago.

A deputation from New Ross Town Council had the opportunity to meet with the late Senator in Boston in March 2008 to seek his family's endorsement of a lifesized statue dedicated to the memory and legacy of his late brother John F. Kennedy.

The then Cathaoirleach Ingrid O'Brien, and the former Town Clerk Ger Mackey, along with Cllr. Michael Sheehan met with Senator Ted Kennedy early one morning before he attended a breakfast meeting.

'He was 76 years at the time and full of life and charm. We discussed a lot about New Ross, Wexford and Ireland and the memories that he and his brother John F Kennedy had of the area and how happy he was to have us over,' explained Cllr. Michael Sheehan.

'You wouldn't have got impression that he was one of the most powerful people in America. He was so down to earth. He never lost the common touch and he was very proud of New Ross and the link he had with it,' added the Fianna Fail councillor.

The deputation also included Cllrs. Victor Furness and Tomas Kavanagh, who travelled over to reinforce New Ross's connection with Hartford.

According to Cllr. Sheehan, Senator Ted Kennedy was 'looking forward' to the unveiling of a commemorative statue on the Quay last summer to mark the 45th anniversary of the late President's historic visit to the town.
