Court confused over plans for 'Shedfest'

Wednesday July 28 2010

WHAT EXACTLY is a 'Shed Fest'? That was the question exercising the minds of Judge Donnchadh Ó Buachalla and members of the Enniscorthy bar last week.

The Enniscorthy sitting of the District Court received an application from Therese Doran as secretary of Buffer's Alley G.A.A. club. She was looking for licence to serve alcohol at a special event – the Shed Fest. The application was moved by solicitor Peter Crean on behalf of his colleague Ed King, who was not in the courtroom at Ardcavan when the matter was called by court clerk Kitty Cassin.

When the judge wondered aloud what exactly was the event in question, Mr. Crean was unable to provide any enlightenment but said he would check the matter out.

At least solicitor Caitriona Walsh, appearing for Wexford County Council, was able to give an assurance that the fire officer had raised no issue that might stand in the way of the special event going ahead.

The matter was put back to await the result of Mr. Crean's investigations but, when the case was recalled he was in no position to provide enlightenment. All he could tell Judge Ó Buachalla was that Mr. King had gone to find out the nature of the festival in question.

Some time later, near the end of business, Mr. King was present in court to say that the special event was the opening of a new facility at the Buffer's Alley grounds. It appeared that the 'shed' was what he called an indoor complex. The judge granted the licence.

The special event is due to take place on August 21.
