Council refuses permission for new shopping centre

Wednesday August 25 2010

WEXFORD COUNTY Council has refused planning permission to a Gorey businessman for a new retail development on the Railway Road in the town.

Thomas Hyland had applied to the Council to demolish a single storey motor factors unit, and a separate shed and outbuildings, and to replace them with a three storey commercial/retail development.

It would have included four retail units at ground floor level; new commercial/office units on the first and second floor levels; together with associated car parking and site works.

Among the reasons listed for refusal were that the planners felt the building constituted over-development of the site, and that inadequate on-site parking was proposed. This, they felt, would lead to roadside parking, which they said would cause serious traffic congestion.
