Church did not know of abuse allegations
Sex offender had regular role at mass for children
Wednesday November 11 2009
DISGRACED swimming coach Ger Doyle served as a volunteer at the weekly children's Mass in Bride Street Church in Wexford while awaiting trial for the sex offences on which he was convicted last week.
But the parish administrator Fr. Jim Fegan said this week that the church authorities knew nothing about the case and no-one brought it to their attention, so Doyle continued to collect and distribute donation baskets and occasionally do readings at the Sunday ceremonies.
Doyle (48), of 7 Emmet Place, Wexford, was convicted in Wexford Circuit Court on 35 sex-related offences at New Ross Swimming Pool between 1981 and 1993. The former Olympic Games coach has been remanded in custody for sentencing in January.
