Calls for The Avenue road to be repaired

Wednesday March 03 2010

A CALL has gone out for the road surface on The Avenue to be repaired before the summer. Stop/Go lights have been in place on the busy street once again this week, after more digging works began.

Cllr. Malcolm Byrne this week insisted that the road surface at the Avenue be repaired before the summer. He said he has demanded of County Council officials that they call to account any developer or agency that dug up the road in recent years, and ensure that they fully reinstate the road to the condition in which they originally found it.

'It is outrageous that a major road into the town and one that has historically been a pleasant, welcoming vista has been left in an appaling state.'

Funding has been made available by the Government to upgrade the footpaths on the Avenue and there are also plans to regulate the parking.

Malcolm warned against the Council picking up the tab where others failed to carry out the appropriate repairs.

'Those responsible for digging up the road must ensure that they repair it,' he maintained.
