46 per cent drop in new buildings across county

THE number of new buildings in Co Wexford dropped by almost 50 per cent in 2011.
Figures released last week show that 457 new residential and commercial buildings were identified in Wexford last year. This represents a year- on- year decrease of 46 per cent compared to 2010, when 853 new buildings were recorded in the county.
This drop in new buildings in Wexford is far larger than the national average of 30 per cent.
The data was compiled by Geodirectory, which was jointly established by An Post and Ordnance Survey Ireland ( OSI) to create and manage Ireland's only complete database of commercial and residential buildings.
Of the 457 new buildings recorded by Geodirectory in Co Wexford, 410 were residential buildings, 40 were commercial buildings, and seven were dual- purpose buildings, with both residential and commercial space.
These new additions bring the total number of buildings in Co Wexford to 68,644, third highest in Leinster after Dublin ( 409,722) and Kildare ( 74,616).
Across the country, Geodirectory recorded 12,237 new buildings, composed of 10,284 residential buildings, 1,661 commercial buildings, and 292 dual- purpose buildings with both residential and commercial components.
The new additions in 2011 bring the total number of buildings in the Republic of Ireland to 1,885,785.
Sligo, where 217 new buildings were identified, showed the largest decrease in new building additions with a 63 per cent drop compared to 2010.
Several counties ( Cavan, Dublin, Kildare, Limerick and Waterford) bucked the national trend showing small increases in new building additions compared to 2010.
The average increase recorded across these counties was 12 per cent, with the largest increase of 34 per cent being recorded in Kildare, where 483 new buildings were identified.
