Anglers take the bait for charity
Wednesday March 03 2010
A TOTAL of 27 anglers took to Courtown's North Beach recently for a charity angling competition in aid of the NWSPCA.
It was a fine but cold day for the event organised by Courtown Sea Anglers Association. Huddled out in the cold, senior and junior participants managed to catch an array of fish, all returned to the sea after capture.
On hand to wish them well was the Chairman of the North Wexford SPCA Colin Webb who thanked the Sea Anglers for their support. Around ¤650 was raised on the day and all monies raised went to the animal welfare organisation.
The organisers thanked Jimmy Fleming and all at Jimmy'z bar in Riverchapel, who facilitated the sign-on and prize presentations along with providing refreshments for the anglers. A raffle was held that evening to add to the monies raised.
Thanks were expressed to all the businesses who donated prizes, especially to Jimmy Fleming, and to Dunbar's Post Office who provided refreshments to the junior members on the beach during the day.
The NWSPCA Chairman was in attendance at the prize presentations, and thanked Tony Gaffney, the organiser, and the Courtown Sea Anglers Association for supporting the event.
The overall winner of the competition was Courtown's Ben Culliton. Second place went to fellow club member Joe Byrne, with Courtown's Adam O'Neill taking third prize. In the juniors' competition, Alex MacNeill was first, Darren O'Connor was second and Cian Dodds was third. The winning pairs prize went to Joe Byrne and Adam O'Neill. The winner of the biggest fish was Mark Brady of Raheny and District Sea Angling Club. The longest flatfish went to Ben Culliton.
Fish caught and released on the day included cod, whiting, flounder and dabs.
