Wexford's young musicians off to orchestra festival
Wednesday February 10 2010
SOME OF Wexford's finest young musicians will be heading to the National Concert Hall in Dublin to take part in the Irish Aviation Authority's 15th annual Festival of Youth Orchestras, which takes place on Saturday February 13.
Featuring musicians from eight youth orchestras, the festival is a showcase of the finest in young orchestral talent. The programme, which ranges from well-known classics to modern medleys, is a must for anyone with any interest in music. There are two concerts, one in the afternoon and one at night.
County Wexford Youth Orchestra will represent Wexford. Founded in 1980 by Alan Cutts and Eileen Herlihy as part of Wexford School of Music, Alan conducted the orchestra until 1994 and collaborated with Wexford School of Ballet and the Wexford Youth Choir on several occasions over the years.
The orchestra provides performance opportunities for the players on a regular basis and also provides a structured progressive learning platform that will act as a stepping-stone for the players to join more senior orchestras in the future.
For this performance the orchestra will be joined by nine string players from the County Wexford Junior Orchestra. The Orchestra hopes to collaborate with other Irish youth orchestras over the coming months.
