'Thoroughly Modern Millie' visits Gorey

GOREY MUSICAL SOCIETY'S 44TH PRODUCTION

Wednesday February 24 2010

GOREY MUSICAL Society rehearsals are well underway for this year's show 'Thoroughly Modern Millie'.

This is the Society's 44th production and is based on the popular movie. The stage version includes a full score of new songs and dance numbers. This musical opened in Broadway in 2002 and won six Tony Awards and Best Musical.

'Thoroughly Modern Millie' tells the story of a smalltown girl Millie Dillmount from Kansas who comes to New York to find work and to marry for money instead of love. However, the man she falls in love with, Jimmy, doesn't have a dime - or so he tells her. Also problems arise when Millie checks into Hotel Priscilla, a rooming house for actresses. The owner, Mrs. Meers, a former actress-come criminal and her two Chinese helpers are in the business of kidnapping young mostly orphaned girls to sell to the Far East for slavery.

This all takes place in New York city in 1922 - the Charleston era - when women were entering the workplace and the rules of love and social behaviour were changing forever. This is a show full of intrigue and jazz. The Society is delighted to welcome back Alan Kinsella as Director, Bernie O'Rourke as Choreographer, and Lar Duffy as Musical Director who is putting the cast through their paces learning new songs.

The Principal roles are as follows: Millie Dillmount, Kim Feehan; Jimmy Smith, Henry Collie; Trevor Graydon III, Malcolm Byrne; Miss Dorothy Brown, Laura Carroll; Mrs. Meers, Catherine Stafford; Ching Ho, Conor Moore; Bun foo, Karol Howell; Muzzy van Hossmere, Tanya Tighe; Miss Flannery, Tina Smith; Some of the Priscilla girls, Julia Kinsella, Jackie Bell, Aine O'Gorman Cullen, Neil Kavanagh, Maura O'Gorman and Erin Klatt.

The show begins on Monday, March 22, and finishes on Saturday, March 27.
