Entertainment

Show-stopping time

Wednesday February 17 2010

THE HUCKLED and they bucked in fine style at St. David's hall as the senior citizens of Oylegate made room at the dinner table for showband star Brendan Bowyer when they enjoyed their annual dinner as guests of the parish youth club.

The party has been a popular feature of local life for the past ten years, with members of the club serving up a four course dinner this time. The meal for 84 was prepared in the kitchen of Willie Kavanagh's pub, with stuffed chicken as the centre piece.

Entertainment was provided by members of the audience, by master of ceremonies and by John Doyle Kennedy's young dancers. Mick Power on his mouth organ and Molly Quigley on spoons were both to the fore. Then there was the band, comprising Michelle Murphy, Damien Foran, Maura O'Leary, Joe O'Connor and Tommy Davitt. But the undoubted star of the show was Brendan himself.

The Waterford man now lives for much of the year in Las Vegas. He was reminded that many of his audience at St. David's hall at the weekend enjoyed his act in the past when he was the front man with the Royal Showband.

His performance on Sunday, suggested that Brendan has lost none of his zest for performing in the mean time. He stayed until supper time at the end of an evening that featured party games and drink all night on the house.

Youth club vice-chairwoman Annette Hayden thanked everyone for turning up and Margaret Rowe returned the compliment on behalf of the guests.
