Thousands of commuters face travel delays after a major signalling fault on a rail line in the Republic.

Irish Rail said services on a number of main routes had been suspended on Friday morning.

They included the northern commuter line, between Dublin and Belfast.

Barry Kenny, of Irish Rail, later confirmed the northern commuter line had reopened - but warned commuters would still face delays.

Mr Kenny said the fault happened overnight during routine maintenance work.

"The key at the moment is to get services back up and running before we get a detailed analysis of this fault," he added.
